Binge eating disorder (BED)

Condition
Binge eating disorder involves an out-of-control impulse to overeat, often triggered by stress, emotional pain, or adrenaline accumulation. For some people, there is an element of addiction involved — food-as-drug feeling. The impulse to binge is often the brain's attempt to soak up and neutralize excess adrenaline that has flooded the system.
  • Low blood glucose and high-fat diet: When someone is overt fat-free but still consuming fat in their food, the body hits a wall. The brain, starved of glucose, triggers binge episodes. This is why people on high-fat diets inevitably have cheat days where they need pizza, carbs, and sugar — the brain is demanding glucose it has been denied.
