Tendonitis
Condition- EBV inflaming tendons via nerve irritation: Epstein-Barr virus (Stage 3-4) releases neurotoxins that inflame nerves. When nerves adjacent to tendons are inflamed, the surrounding tendon tissue becomes chronically inflamed. In the case of elbow tendonitis (tennis elbow), EBV or shingles inflames the ulnar nerve and surrounding connective tissue, producing the characteristic pain. MM notes EBV specifically causes elbow, wrist, and shoulder tendonitis through inflamed ulnar nerves (mentioned in Brain Saver in context of lupus-related tendonitis).
- overuse triggering viral migration: Repetitive physical stress or overuse of a body area draws viral activity to that location. The virus is opportunistic — it exploits areas under physical stress, using the increased blood flow and microtrauma to establish or intensify its presence in tendon and nerve tissue. This is why tendonitis often follows heavy physical activity but only in people with an underlying viral load.
- shingles virus: The shingles virus (varicella-zoster and its variants, many of which produce no visible rash) causes inflammation along nerve pathways and in adjacent soft tissues. Shingles tends to go to the back and peripheral nerve areas, and is a significant contributor to tendonitis, joint pain, and connective tissue inflammation in those locations.
- low-grade viral activity: The true cause of tendonitis is low-grade viral infection — primarily Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), HHV-6, and shingles — that targets areas of the body being overused. When a person uses a body part heavily (e.g., an elbow in tennis, a shoulder in swimming, a heel in running) and harbors an underlying virus, the virus takes advantage of that stressed area, migrating to the tendons and creating inflammation. This is why not all people who do the same activity develop tendonitis — it depends on whether a virus is present and its aggressiveness.
