Tonsillitis

Condition
The tonsils are part of the immune and lymphatic system. They sit at the entrance of the throat as a protective barrier. The lymphatic system and tonsils work hand in hand to protect the body from pathogens.
  • Epstein-Barr virus: Epstein-Barr getting into the tonsils
  • EBV and mono: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) entering the tonsils causes a childhood form of mono that is not recognized or diagnosed. Tonsillitis is the beginning phase of mono in children — it is, in essence, children's mono when it is localized in the tonsils.
  • Streptococcus deep in tonsils: Streptococcus bacteria lodge deep inside tonsil tissue, not on the surface. This is why throat swabs and cultures frequently fail to detect the real cause — the strep is buried, not surface-visible. The doctor does a swab and nothing comes back positive, but strep is the true driver of chronic tonsil inflammation.
  • Strep: There's always strep present with tonsillitis, even if throat cultures don't find it on the surface
  • Mono: Tonsillitis is the beginning of bouts of mono - it's a form of children's mono early on when it's in the tonsils
  • Zinc deficiency: Zinc deficiency is the core reason children experience tonsillitis. Without adequate zinc, the immune system cannot properly suppress strep and EBV in the tonsil lymphatic tissue. Everyone is zinc deficient to varying degrees.
