Interstitial cystitis

Condition
  • Neurological component: A significant portion of IC-related overactive bladder is neurological — sensitized pudendum nerves and bladder-adjacent nerves create the urgency sensation. GABA helps with this sensitized nerve component.
  • Pathogens: Caused by long-term infections of streptococcus, Epstein-Barr virus, bacteria making home in bladder, urethra, urinary tract
  • Epstein-Barr virus co-infection: EBV can also be involved, releasing so many toxins out of the liver that they eventually get into the kidneys, inflaming the pudendum nerve and other nerves around the bladder, causing overactive bladder-type symptoms alongside IC.
  • Streptococcus bacteria (long-term): IC is caused by years of streptococcus bacteria burrowing into the bladder lining, urethra, and urinary tract, creating pockets. Strep feeds on dairy, eggs, high-fat diets, and other troublemaker foods. Over years, this chronic strep infection becomes what is labeled 'interstitial cystitis.'
  • Both strep and virus present simultaneously: Normally both a virus and bacteria are present in combination: viral neurotoxins irritate the lining of the bladder while bacteria nestles deep in the bladder lining — both causing inflammation at once.
  • Streptococcus bacteria: Streptococcus bacteria causes interstitial cystitis
